How we verify
Mortgage Lender Data is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.
Sources
- FFIEC / CFPB HMDA Data Browser (aggregations and filer lists) — Each lender's HMDA records for the year, counted by action taken, loan purpose and loan type, and the list of filers with record counts nationally and by state. Published by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council.
- HMDA public transmittal sheet (snapshot) — Each filer's LEI, name, federal agency code and headquarters city, state and ZIP.
- GLEIF LEI records — Legal name and headquarters address for each Legal Entity Identifier, from the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation.
We take every institution in the FFIEC/CFPB HMDA Data Browser's filer list for the latest year whose public transmittal sheet has been published (currently 2025, published in 2026), and keep those headquartered in a U.S. state, DC or territory that originated or purchased at least one loan. That gives about 4,600 lenders. HMDA data are annual: a weekly refresh re-checks the files but the figures change only when a new year is published or a lender resubmits.
For each lender we query the Data Browser for its records by action taken and loan purpose, and by loan type, and the filer list for each state. Loans originated counts action taken 1 (loan originated). Share of decided applications approved is (originated + approved but not accepted) ÷ (originated + approved but not accepted + denied), shown only when at least 30 applications were decided; withdrawn and incomplete applications, purchased loans and preapproval requests are excluded. Largest states are each state's share of the lender's HMDA records.
Institution type comes from the federal agency code on the lender's HMDA filing: NCUA filers (and CFPB filers named as credit unions) are credit unions, HUD filers are non-bank mortgage companies, and OCC, Federal Reserve, FDIC and other CFPB filers are banks. Names come from the Data Browser; legal names and street addresses come from GLEIF when its headquarters city matches the HMDA filing.
We do not show applicant demographics, pricing data, or any comparison or label that judges a named lender. Lenders are listed under their headquarters city and ordered by number of loans originated, then alphabetically; this is not a ranking. Featured lenders appear in a separate, labelled box, pay a flat advertising fee that is the same for every lender, and never change that order.
What a badge means
HMDA filer: The lender filed Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data for the year shown, as published by the FFIEC and the CFPB in the HMDA Data Browser and public transmittal sheet. HMDA reporting is not a license or an endorsement. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.
Freshness
Data was last refreshed on 2026-10-16. HMDA data are published once a year; we re-check the source weekly and switch to a new year as soon as its public files appear.
